It’s Pride Month
August is Pride Month in Austin, deviating from the national event that is held in June. Pride events will be on our events calendar all month long! The city’s biggest Pride event is a festival and parade on Aug. 22 at Fiesta Gardens hosted by the Austin Pride Foundation. The event includes live music, performances, local vendors, food, drinks, and more.
Rainey Is Hosting First Thursdays Again
The Rainey Street District is hosting a First Thursday event the evening of Aug. 6 that includes drink and food specials at bars and restaurants in the area. Bungalow is offering $1 drinks and Daydreamer Coffee is selling wine for $5 off, for example.
Paddle for Puppies Is Back
Austin Pets Alive! is hosting its 15th annual Paddle for Puppies fundraising event on Aug. 9. The day starts at Rowing Dock and participants row or paddle on Lady Bird Lake. Proceeds from the event help puppies in the shelter’s Parvo ICU program.
School Speed Zones Return
Austin Independent School District students go back to class starting Aug. 18, which means you need to start watching for school speed zones again. Speeding in a school zone is punishable by a fine of $20 per mile over the limit plus court costs. Slow down out there!
New City Budget To Be Decided
Austin City Council members will finalize the city’s budget for the next fiscal year by mid-month. The budget will go into effect on Oct. 1. At stake is a rise in property taxes, millions of dollars in cuts to the city’s social service budget, and an increase in the Austin Police Department’s recruiting budget.
