UT-Austin Prepares For Another Hot Home Game

Texas Football will face Ohio State on Saturday after a dominant 59-7 win over Texas State on Sept. 5. But the score wasn’t the only thing making headlines after the Longhorns’ home opener at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

• It was really hot for fans and even hotter for players. During a Monday press conference, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian thanked the more than 100,000 fans for the “amazing turnout” despite the heat. He also said the temperature on the field for players reached 160 degrees. [Longhorn Network]
• Thirteen people were taken to the hospital during the game. Austin-Travis County EMS said people needed assistance for a variety of medical issues, but three cases could have been heat-related. [KXAN]
• UT plans to add more water stations. Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte said he’s working with staff to add even more water stations throughout the stadium. Fans can bring one sealed, soft plastic water bottle up to one liter with them to the game. [KVUE]

South Congress Restaurant Closed After Fire

Perla’s Seafood & Oyster Bar is temporarily closed following a fire that broke out on Sunday evening. It took firefighters almost two hours to put out the blaze. The restaurant is evaluating the damage and says it will share a reopening date as soon as possible. [Austin American-Statesman]

Austin-Area Cities Ditch Flock Cameras

A growing number of Central Texas cities are discontinuing their use of Flock Safety cameras, which automatically scan and catalog license plates. Despite public opposition to this AI-enhanced technology, privately owned Flock cameras are still operating throughout Austin. [KUT]

Health Officials Consider Tax Hike To Expand Services

Central Health, the Travis County Hospital District, may increase property taxes to help expand mental health services. The Board of Managers will vote on its budget and tax rate today. [KXAN]

U.S. Has Released a Billion Sterile Flies in Texas

The sterile flies’ mission is to combat New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasitic fly that can infect livestock, wildlife, pets, and even people. This isn’t sterile flies’ first rodeo. They were first used decades ago to combat screwworms. [KVUE]
