| | | Fall Drawdown at Lake Austin Canceled | The city has canceled its planned drawdown at Lake Austin in October and November, citing business and event concerns in a city memo. [City of Austin] | - What is a drawdown? A drawdown is when officials lower lake levels so property owners in the area can do maintenance on their docks, boat slips, bulkheads, and other shoreline structures. A drawdown also gives property owners a chance to remove debris and sediment. [City of Austin]
- The drawdown would have lasted a month and a half. City officials planned to lower the lake by 10 feet between Oct. 12 and Nov. 30. It would have been the first drawdown for the lake in about 10 years. [Austin American-Statesman]
- Event concerns led to the cancellation. Businesses and events happening along the lake would have been affected by the drawdown, the city said. The fall wedding season, University of Texas at Austin football, and Formula 1 are among the events the city heard concerns about. [City of Austin]
- A drawdown wonโt happen in 2026. While the Lower Colorado River Authority found that a drawdown could be done Dec. 1 through Jan. 15 or in January and February, officials ultimately decided against it because of 2021โs Winter Storm Uri. The lake needs to be full during possible winter storms to keep hydroelectric generators along the Highland Lakes running. The generators help support the stateโs power grid. [City of Austin]
