A flood watch is in effect for Austin. (National Weather Service)

ACL Fest Coincides With Fall’s First Major Downpour. Here’s What You Need To Know.

A Pacific cold front is expected to move into the Austin area on Thursday, bringing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms to the city as Austin City Limits Music Festival gets underway. [National Weather Service]

  • A flood watch is in effect. The cold front could bring 2 to 4 inches of rain to the Austin area between today and Friday. Some areas may see up to 8 inches of rainfall, the National Weather Service said. Due to the large amount of rain, a flood watch is in effect until 7 p.m. on Friday. That means you need to stay weather aware and watch for flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and low-water crossings. [National Weather Service]
  • ACL officials are preparing the park. Festival officials say they are monitoring the weather and will give attendees updates through its social media channels, on its app, and via text. Workers are clearing drains and pre-positioning equipment to protect Zilker Park. “So, dust off your rainboots and prepare for some cooler temperatures as we approach the weekend,” the festival said. [ACL Fest]
  • Abbott has initiated state resources. Gov. Greg Abbott activated the state’s emergency response resources this week, making 1,900 responders and more than 1,500 pieces of equipment, like boats and helicopters, available to areas that need it. [CBS Austin]
  • The festival has only been canceled because of weather once. In 2013, thunderstorms dropped 4.22 inches of rain on Zilker Park, causing the festival to be shut down during its second weekend. The first day of the festival was delayed by 3 hours due to rain in 2021. [Austin American-Statesman]
  • Be prepared! I know some of you are headed out to the park no matter what, so it’s good to be ready. Forget a cute festival outfit and opt for water-proof shoes, a poncho, and an extra pair of socks if you can. Umbrellas are not allowed at the festival. [ACL Fest]
  • Hear it from a forecaster. We caught up with CBS Austin Meteorologist Avery Tomasco, who said flash flood possibilities will likely be done before the bulk of the festival starts, on today’s podcast. Give it a listen! 👇
