Your Daily Guide

🦫 Happy Wednesday, y’all! This is cracking me up: The Washington Post asked people at a North Texas Buc-ee’s about how the state’s U.S. Senate race will turn out in November. Is there a better place to do some journalism? I think not!

AISD One of Four Districts Selected for State Finance Audit

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines has selected Austin Independent School District to undergo a finance audit this fall.

  • The audit will look at taxpayer funds. Huffines wants to make sure AISD is using taxpayer funds responsibly, saying the audit will look at whether the district’s spending complies with state law and is directed toward students, classrooms, and teachers. The state doesn’t want districts using taxpayer money on administrative expansion or non-instructional bureaucracy. The audit comes after Gov. Greg Abbott requested such a review in August. • AISD is one of four districts the state is reviewing. School districts in El Paso, Prosper, and Barbers Hill are also being audited. AISD is the largest of the four districts selected. The results of the audit are due Dec. 31 before the next Texas legislative session starts on Jan. 12. [Comptroller’s Office]
  • The audit comes at a tough time for the district. The Austin school district is facing state intervention after two middle schools received their fifth consecutive failing state ratings. A state takeover could be expensive, leaving the district to cover the costs of new academic programs, and possibly a new superintendent or conservator. [Austin Current]
