Red River Cultural District Gets a Task Force and Other Downtown Updates

A lot is happening in downtown Austin. We’ve got your updates:

  • The city has created a Red River task force. Mayor Kirk Watson announced the creation of a task force to save Red River as the cultural district faces venue closures. The task force will be led by Jonathan Stone, the city’s downtown strategy officer, and look at how the district can be preserved while also making money. [City of Austin]
  • Musicians get cheap parking. A new parking program allows musicians to park for $5 while performing at participating venues. Metropolis Technologies launched the program on Tuesday and said it includes 12 venues and four parking garages. The company plans to expand to nine garages and more venues. [KVUE]
  • A Red River club has enacted a no-phones policy. EDM club Kingdom, located in the Red River Cultural District, announced on Instagram this week that it is going phone-free. The club is asking its patrons to keep their phones tucked away and said all phone cameras will be covered every night. “Back to the music. Back to the moment. Back to each other,” the club’s announcement says. [Kingdom]

More Austin Events

♥️ Before I go, I’ll leave you with this thought from our brand new member Bryna T.:

“I’m new to Austin and I love the arts and entertainment culture here, but didn’t know where to start. Thanks to the newsletter and events list at the end of each one, I’ve done so many cool things!”

If that resonates with you, we’d love to welcome you to our membership program, which is just $10 a month or $100 a year!
